December 2008 Puzzle Solution
As the flavor suggests, these "gifts" can be divided up into twelve sets, such that a particular word can follow the words in each set. The sets, appropriately, are related to the Twelve Days of Christmas song. For example, ADDAMS and NUCLEAR both take FAMILY after them, and so does PARTRIDGE, the first gift. Here are the sets, in order from the song:
  • (PARTRIDGE) FAMILY: ADDAMS, NUCLEAR
  • (DOVE) BAR: KLONDIKE, MARS, TAPAS
  • (HEN) NIGHT: GUY FAWKES, PROM, STARRY, TWELFTH, WALPURGIS
  • (BIRD) BRAIN: LAME, LEFT, PEA, SCATTER
  • (RING) MASTER: PUPPET, TASK, TOAST
  • (GOOSE) STEP: DOOR, LOCK
  • (SWAN) DIVE: NOSE, SCUBA
  • (MAID) SERVICE: CIVIL, CUSTOMER, LIP, POSTAL, SECRET, SELECTIVE
  • (LADY) MARMALADE: ORANGE, QUINCE
  • (LORD) NELSON: BABY FACE, JUDD, WILLIE
  • (PIPER) PALIN: BRISTOL, TRACK, TRIG
  • (DRUMMER) BOY: FALLOUT, PAPER, WHIPPING
Now, index into the follower word of each set (e.g. FAMILY) by the number of items in that set (bold letters above). This gives you your answer, ARTISTICALLY.
