A closer look at the answer words reveals that they are one letter off from the common pangram (a sentence which uses every letter of the alphabet), "Quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog":

  • quack
  • blown
  • pox
  • humps
  • aver
  • thb
  • laze
  • dot
The bolded letters are the ones that are different, spelling the appropriate answer: ALPHABET
