The clues are in alphabetical order by answer, and each answer contains the three-letter FIFA country code of one of the 2010 World Cup participants. Fit the answers into the provided blanks such that each answer's country code falls in the pink blanks, and the tournament bracket plays out sensibly given the positions of the starting countries. (For instance, the Game 1 word must have either NED or GRE in it.) You'll end up with:
Game 1: sigNED Then take the starred letters from each word, in this order, to get GROUPS OF WINNERS. The initial round of the World Cup consists of 8 groups of 4 teams each, and the groups are lettered A-H. Taking the group of the country in each answer, in the same order, gives: E E F G G F E D C C D E E D D The final aha is that, as the flavor text says, you have to PLAY one more time in order to get the answer. Hum these letters as musical notes, and you'll get something like Beethoven's ODE TO JOY. (It's apropos that Germany, the team that won the tournament in this puzzle, would listen to this song!) This puzzle came with a bonus: take the groups of the 8 losing countries in the first round to get BACHACHE, which is what one might get from listening to too much classical music. But don't fake a bachache in the middle of a concert, or you may get yellow-carded for simulating... |
